Acclimatization before your Huayhuash Trek

Prepare properly before entering the high mountains.

Many Huayhuash trekking days take place at elevations above 4,000 meters, with high mountain passes reaching significantly higher depending on the itinerary.

For this reason, proper acclimatization is an essential part of preparing for a Huayhuash trek.

At Inkaland Treks, we strongly recommend allowing at least 2–3 full days of acclimatization before a demanding multi-day trek or climb. Our general acclimatization guidance follows this same recommendation for high-altitude programs.

We recommend arriving in Huaraz several days before your trekking departure and using progressive day hikes to help your body adapt before entering the Huayhuash range.

Our team can help you organize:

  • Individual acclimatization hikes
  • Private day hikes
  • Transportation
  • Progressive acclimatization programs
  • Complete acclimatization + trekking packages

If you are arriving from another high-altitude destination, let us know about your previous activities and altitude exposure so we can help you plan appropriately.

Best time to trek the Cordillera Huayhuash

The main trekking season in the Cordillera Huayhuash is generally May to September, during the Andean dry season.

These months typically offer more stable conditions, clearer mountain views and favorable conditions for multi-day high-altitude trekking.

Mountain weather can vary from year to year, however, so the best timing also depends on your specific itinerary and travel plans.

If you are planning a Huayhuash trek, we recommend considering both the trekking season and the time required for proper acclimatization in Huaraz.
