High-altitude mountain experiences and practical climbing courses in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru.

Climbing & Mountaineering in huaraz

The Cordillera Blanca offers exceptional opportunities to experience high-altitude climbing, glacier travel and mountaineering in the Peruvian Andes.

At Inkaland Treks, climbing is a specialized part of our mountain programs. Based in Huaraz, we focus on selected peaks and practical mountaineering courses in the Cordillera Blanca for travelers who want to experience their first mountain summit, develop technical skills or progress toward more demanding climbing objectives.

Our programs include Nevado Mateo, Nevado Pisco, Vallunaraju and Yanapaccha, together with specialized mountaineering courses at Vallunaraju and Yanapaccha.

Whether you are looking for your first high-altitude summit, an introductory glacier climb or practical mountaineering training, our team can help you choose the right program according to your experience, acclimatization and goals.

Our approach to climbing

CLIMBING IN THE CORDILLERA BLANCA WITH INKALAND TREKS

Trekking is our core specialty, and climbing is a natural extension of our work in the mountains.

We intentionally focus on a selected group of Cordillera Blanca peaks and training environments, rather than trying to cover every mountain in the Andes.

This allows us to concentrate on the routes, logistics, mountain conditions and preparation required for the programs we actually operate.

Our approach is simple:

Prepare properly. Learn progressively. Climb responsibly.

Our climbing programs are designed for travelers who want to:

  • Experience their first high-altitude summit
  • Progress from trekking into mountaineering
  • Learn glacier and ice-climbing techniques
  • Develop rope and mountain safety skills
  • Gain practical experience in a real alpine environment
  • Prepare for future climbing objectives
  • Combine acclimatization, trekking and climbing

Prepare before you climb

GOOD PREPARATION MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Our climbing objectives may be more accessible than highly technical expeditions, but they are not easy hikes.

A high-altitude summit requires:

  • Good physical condition
  • Proper acclimatization
  • Appropriate mountain preparation
  • Ability to walk for several hours at altitude
  • Comfort with mountain terrain
  • Technical equipment appropriate to the objective

Depending on the program, you may use:

mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, ropes and other technical equipment.

For this reason, we strongly recommend preparing progressively before your ascent.

Acclimatization before climbing

✅ ACCLIMATIZATION FIRST

Many of our climbing programs reach elevations of 5,000 meters and above.

Arriving in Huaraz and immediately attempting a mountain ascent is therefore not recommended.

For most climbing programs, we recommend allowing at least 2–3 full days of progressive acclimatization, with additional preparation when appropriate according to your previous altitude experience, physical condition and selected objective.

Your acclimatization can be organized in different ways.

✅ ACCLIMATIZATION → CLIMB

Complete several appropriate acclimatization hikes around Huaraz before your mountain ascent.

✅ TREKKING → CLIMB

Finish a multi-day trek such as Santa Cruz or Huayhuash and continue with a climbing program while already acclimatized, provided the itinerary and physical demands are appropriate.

✅ CLIMBING COURSE → SUMMIT

Develop practical mountaineering skills through a course at Vallunaraju or Yanapaccha, then progress toward a summit objective according to your experience and preparation.

Our team can help you design the most appropriate progression according to your:

  • Available time
  • Physical preparation
  • Previous experience
  • Acclimatization
  • Climbing objective

Professional mountain guides

CLIMB WITH CERTIFIED MOUNTAIN PROFESSIONALS

At Inkaland Treks, all our climbing and mountaineering programs are led by certified professional mountain guides.

We work with local mountain guides who are members of the Asociación de Guías de Montaña del Perú (AGMP) and internationally recognized through the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (UIAGM/IFMGA).

Professional certification, local mountain knowledge and experience are essential when operating in high-altitude environments.

We do not simply assign a trekking guide to a climbing program.

Our climbing experiences are operated with qualified mountain professionals appropriate to the objective and terrain.

Local knowledge. Professional certification. Mountain experience.

That is part of the Inkaland Treks standard.

Which climbing program is right for you?

WHICH CLIMBING EXPERIENCE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

The appropriate program depends on your previous experience, physical preparation, acclimatization and objectives.

Program Best suited for
Nevado Mateo Properly acclimatized travelers looking for an introductory high-altitude summit
Vallunaraju Travelers seeking an accessible glacier climbing experience
Nevado Pisco Properly acclimatized trekkers seeking a classic high-altitude summit
Yanapaccha Climbers seeking a more technical glacier objective
Vallunaraju Course Trekkers and beginners wanting structured practical mountaineering training
Yanapaccha Course Participants wanting more advanced glacier, ice and mountain safety training

If you are unsure which program is appropriate for you, contact our team before booking.

We can review your previous experience, physical preparation and acclimatization and recommend the most suitable option.

Trekking + Climbing

COMBINE TREKKING & CLIMBING IN THE CORDILLERA BLANCA

For many travelers, the best preparation for a climbing objective begins with proper acclimatization and trekking.

Because Inkaland Treks specializes in both trekking and climbing in the Cordillera Blanca, we can combine different stages into one progressive mountain experience:

Arrival in Huaraz → Acclimatization → Trekking → Technical Training → Summit

You may, for example, complete a Santa Cruz Trek or Huayhuash Trek and then continue with a climbing program, provided your itinerary, recovery and physical condition allow it.

Another option is to complete a mountaineering course first and then progress toward a summit objective.

Our team can design the most appropriate combination according to your available time, experience and goals.

Experience & Preparation

DO I NEED PREVIOUS CLIMBING EXPERIENCE?

It depends on the program.

Some introductory objectives, such as Nevado Mateo and Vallunaraju, can be suitable for travelers beginning their mountaineering experience, provided they have good physical preparation, proper acclimatization and are comfortable following professional mountain guidance.

More technical objectives such as Yanapaccha require a higher level of preparation and, depending on the program, previous mountain or glacier experience.

For travelers with limited climbing experience, a mountaineering course can be an excellent way to develop technical skills before attempting a more demanding objective.

Our team can help you choose a progressive program based on your actual experience rather than simply choosing a mountain by altitude.

Best time for climbing

BEST TIME FOR CLIMBING IN THE CORDILLERA BLANCA

The main climbing season in the Cordillera Blanca generally falls during the Andean dry season, from May to September.

These months usually offer more stable weather and favorable conditions for high-altitude climbing.

Mountain conditions can change, however, and every ascent remains subject to current weather, glacier and route conditions.

Our team can advise you on the most appropriate timing according to your selected mountain and travel plans.

Cordillera blanca climbing faq

Are these mountains easy because they are not highly technical?

Not necessarily.

Some of our climbing objectives are considered more accessible than highly technical mountaineering expeditions, but they are still high-altitude mountain ascents.

They require good physical condition, proper acclimatization, appropriate equipment and the ability to follow professional mountain guidance.

Do I need previous climbing experience?

Not necessarily for every introductory program.

However, proper acclimatization, good physical preparation and the ability to follow technical instructions are essential.

More technical objectives such as Yanapaccha require greater preparation and may require previous mountain or glacier experience depending on the program.

Do I need previous trekking experience?

Previous trekking and mountain experience is strongly recommended.

Even an introductory climb involves significant physical effort at high altitude, early starts, uneven mountain terrain and changing mountain conditions.

Do I need to acclimatize before climbing?

Yes. Proper acclimatization is essential.

Our climbing programs reach elevations of approximately 5,000 meters and above.

We recommend arriving in Huaraz several days before your climb and following an appropriate acclimatization plan.

Can I take a climbing course before attempting a summit?

Yes.

Our Vallunaraju and Yanapaccha mountaineering courses provide practical training that can help participants develop technical mountain skills before progressing toward a summit objective.

Can I combine a trek and a climb?

Yes.

You can complete a multi-day trek such as Santa Cruz or Huayhuash and then continue with a climbing program, provided the itinerary and physical demands are appropriate.

Our team can help you design a progressive trekking + climbing itinerary.

What equipment is required for climbing?

Equipment depends on the mountain and program.

Depending on the objective, equipment may include:

  • Mountaineering boots
  • Crampons
  • Ice axe
  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Rope
  • Technical glacier equipment
  • Appropriate high-altitude clothing

We provide a detailed equipment list before your program and can advise you about rental options.

Are your climbing guides certified?

Yes.

All Inkaland Treks climbing and mountaineering programs are led by certified professional mountain guides.

Our local guides are members of the Asociación de Guías de Montaña del Perú (AGMP) and internationally recognized through the UIAGM/IFMGA.

This is part of our commitment to professional mountain operations, technical competence and safety.

Can I organize a private climbing program?

Yes.

Private climbing programs are available according to guide and operational availability.

Start with the right mountain. Prepare properly. Learn the skills. Climb with confidence.
