The Olleros to Chavin trek, which traces the pre-Inca pilgrimage route to Chavin in the South part of the Cordillera Blanca. The peasant farmers of the area came up with the idea in hopes to preserve some of their Andean heritage. The entire hike is done using donkeys  and over the 3 day walk through the ancient pre Inca path. The route starts in Olleros village, which is 18 miles  South from Huaraz, and ends at Chavin, the oldest archeological site in the Americas 600 – 400 BC. The altitude ranges from the highest at the Yanashallash Pass (15,420 ft / 4700m) to Chavin, which is the lowest at 10,006 ft / 3050m. After finish the trek we are visiting the famous archaeological complex of Chavin de Huantar, South America oldest and most advanced Pre-Inca civilization.

Day 2: Sacracancha / TPaso Yanashallash / Shongo  – (Camp 2)
Day 3: Shongo / Chavin – Return to Huaraz

The Olleros to Chavin trek, which traces the pre-Inca pilgrimage route to Chavin in the South part of the Cordillera Blanca. Day 1: Huaraz /Olleros / Sacracancha

The first easiest day is a pretty steady hike from Olleros to Sacracancha where we camp for the night. The trail is pleasant and lovely, with snow-bound white capped peaks filling the horizon. After 5 – 6 hours of hiking we reach the Sacracancha campsite (12,467 ft / 3800m).

Day 2: Sacracancha / Yanashallash Pass / Shongo

Today the trail continues up through the narrow valley towards the Yanashallash Pass at 15,420 ft / 4700m.  On the trail we walk on the ancient pre-Inca trail which takes approximately 4 -5 hours. From here we will eventually reach the other side of the Cordillera Blanca.  We will continue descending through the pre-Inca trail. The rest of the hike has beautiful views of the valleys as we descend to the campsite at Shongo 12,631 ft /3850m).

Day 3: Shongo / Chavin Archeological site / Huaraz

We continue through the valley as the trail descends down to the villages of Chichucancha, Hatu, and Nunupata passing through traditional Quechua houses with reach farmland. You will meet the local Quechua people in their traditional native lifestyle. During this trek, you’ll enjoy viewing the spectacular Huantsan Peak at 20,981 ft / 6395m. We next reach the archeological site of Chavin located at 10,006 ft / 3050m. You’ll enjoy the afternoon sightseeing at this ancient archeological site that pre-dates the Inca’s and the Wari nations. Finally we drive back to Huaraz where we pass through the Kawish Tunnel, which is the center of the Continental Divide in Peru.
